How to Track Traffic From ChatGPT and AI Search in Google Analytics 4

By Linh, Digital Strategist at ILIA

Key takeaway

To track AI search traffic in GA4, create a custom channel group with an "AI Search" channel that matches session sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, and claude.ai, and place it above the Referral channel. You can then compare AI visitors' engagement and conversions with your other channels. Note that Google AI Overviews traffic is still reported as Google organic search.

If you are investing in generative engine optimisation (GEO), you need a way to see whether it brings visitors. The good news is that when someone clicks a link inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, or Claude, the visit usually appears in Google Analytics 4. The problem is that GA4 files it under general referral traffic, so it is easy to miss. A few minutes of setup fixes that.

Step 1: Check which AI sources already send you visitors

In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Change the primary dimension to Session source and search for chatgpt, perplexity, gemini, copilot, and claude. ChatGPT usually appears as chatgpt.com, because it adds a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to many of the links it shows.

Step 2: Create a custom channel group

Go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups, and create a new channel group. GA4 copies the default channels into it, so your existing reports stay comparable. You need an editor or administrator role on the property to do this.

Step 3: Add an AI Search channel

Add a new channel named AI Search. Set the condition to Source matches regex and use a pattern such as: chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai. Add new AI tools to the pattern as they appear in your source report.

Step 4: Move AI Search above Referral

GA4 assigns each session to the first channel whose rules it matches. Drag the AI Search channel above Referral so AI visits are not swallowed by the Referral channel, then save the group.

Step 5: Build a report and compare results

In the Traffic acquisition report, switch the primary dimension to your new channel group. You can now compare AI Search visitors' engaged sessions, key events such as form submissions and WhatsApp clicks, and landing pages against organic search, paid ads, and social.

What GA4 cannot show you

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are reported as normal Google organic traffic, not as a separate source.
  • Some AI apps open links without passing referrer information, so those visits appear as Direct.
  • Many people read an AI answer, then search for your brand name later, so AI influence also shows up as branded search and direct visits.
  • GA4 shows visits, not mentions. To see whether AI tools recommend you, regularly ask them the questions your customers ask and record whether you are cited.
AI search traffic is often small but highly qualified. Judge it by enquiries, not just visit counts.

Make the numbers useful

Make sure conversions are tracked as key events, otherwise you will only see visits. Review AI Search monthly alongside your landing pages: the pages that attract AI visitors show you which content AI engines trust, and which topics are worth expanding.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT traffic show up in Google Analytics?

Yes. When someone clicks a link in ChatGPT, the visit usually appears in GA4 with chatgpt.com as the session source, often because ChatGPT adds a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to links. By default it is grouped under Referral traffic.

Can I track Google AI Overviews traffic separately?

Not directly in GA4. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported as Google organic search. Google Search Console includes them in its overall performance data but does not separate them out.

Why is my AI search traffic so low?

AI tools answer many questions without sending a click, so traffic is usually smaller than from traditional search. It also tends to be higher intent. Low numbers often mean your business is not being cited yet, which is what GEO work aims to change.

Will the custom channel group change my historical data?

No. Custom channel groups are applied to reports, including past data, without changing the underlying data or the default channel group, so you can switch between them at any time.
